About us

This is the Editorial from our first printed edition in 1992:

Painting on holiday is an old traditon. The young men who went on the Grand Tour in the 18th centruy packed their paints and brought back elegant watercolour views of the places they had visited. In the Victorian times watercolour painting was an essential past of a young lady's education. Queen Victoria herself illustrated her Highland Journal with delicate and very competent paintings.

Combining a holiday with art tuition is a comparatively recent idea but a fast increasing number of artists and centres offering these courses proves how popular painting holidays have become.

Nor are holiday painters restricted to bringing home only watercolours. The revolution in art materials has produced neatly - and firmly - packed tubes of paint, pads of high quality paper, light-weight easels and compact boxes to carry it all. Still watercolour, of course, and a rainbow array of coloured pencils, but now add gouache, fast-drying acrylics, oil-pastels and even oil-paints - the range and choice is exciting.

This, the first Painting Holiday Directory, is your guide to finding the type of painting holiday that will suit you best. Do you want to stay near home? - there are holidays right across the United Kingdom and Ireland. Do you want to travel abroad?
The Painting Holiday Directory covers France, Spain, Italy,
Switzerland and Kenya. Look at the maps and make your
choice.

Are you a beginner or an experienced painter? Is a non-painting partner coming with you? Do you want a relaxed atmosphere or a structured college course?

FROM FRIENDLY FARMHOUSE TO A CASTLE IN SPAIN - whatever you are looking for is in the Painting Holiday Directory.

Under the names, addresses and contact numbers you will find a section ... which will give you a brief guide to the facilities offered. These details were supplied by the organisers and were correct at time of going to press. The Painting Holiday Directory cannot accept any responsibility for inaccuaracies or subsequent changes, or for incorrect information.
ALWAYS SEND FOR A BROCHURE AND FULL DETAILS BEFORE BOOKING.

From then on the artists and organisers take over. In their own words they tell you about themselves, where they paint and the type of holiday courses they run. The variety is amazing! The holidays have one thing in common; each and every one of them provides inspiration for an artist.

Although I have compiled and edited it, this book could not have been produced without the help and co-operation of the contributers. It is their words and their illustrations which make it such a good read.

I hope you enjoy it.

----------------------------------------------------------------
This was the Editorial for the first printed edition of the Painting Holiday Directory. A lot has changed since then. However, the Painting Holiday Directory has not changed in its basic intention; to provide the best and most useful information to anyone who wants to enjoy painting in a different environment, with different people and with a selection of tutors. Being on the Internet will give a number of additional benefits. We will be more informative, and up to date and be able to introduce you to new holidays quicker. Also, we will offer a place for you to communicate with each other and exchange ideas and experiences.

I hope you enjoy our Website, as much as we have enjoyed designing it.
Anne
